5 Ways to Grow and Maintain your YouTube Audience

Growing your YouTube audience

With over 2 billion monthly active users, YouTube is the number one video sharing platform on the Internet. But how do you grow and maintain your YouTube audience?

For many people, YouTube is a platform to flex their creative muscles. Also, it’s a great platform to make money if you have a YouTube channel.

However, is it really easy to make money on YouTube? As a matter of fact, it’s not easy to make money on this popular video streaming platform.

Despite the tales of mega-rich influencers on YouTube, it’s much more likely that a YouTube channel makes no money than a lot.

Making money on YouTube

From renowned brands to recently launched startups, marketers, and bloggers, everyone wants to be on YouTube.

However, as pointed out by Fortune Magazine after a comprehensive study, perceived success on YouTube – dubbed the new Hollywood – is likely to equate to poverty wages.

That doesn’t stop a large section of YouTube’s 1.8 billion users from believing that they can make the breakthrough.

Moreover, many streamers treat their channels as a hobby. If they can make some extra money, then well and good. But they will be realistic enough to realise it’s hard to become a big fish in YouTube’s vast pond.

If you want to make money from YouTube, even if it is just a small amount each month, then it’s important to stand out from the millions of other users striving to do the same.

Below we are going to look at five ways to do that. Nothing is guaranteed to offer you that golden ticket, but keeping in mind these tips should help increase your YouTube views and subscribers:

#1]. Practice consistency of output

Regardless of what you choose to broadcast, doing it regularly will help get you noticed on YouTube. The platform is a grind for most accounts, and you might find that just a handful of viewers watch your ten-part series on the map work of J.R.R. Tolkien.

It might seem easier to give up and try something else, but perseverance can pay off. Inconsistency – not following through with a series, not uploading videos for a long time, haphazardly changing topics – is likely to turn off any potential subscribers.

If you can’t post your regular video for a genuine reason, then drop a note to your subscribers to let them know why and when you will be back. Sometimes it might feel that you are broadcasting to nobody, but volume and consistency of output are important to get your YouTube account off the ground.

#2]. Find some niche topics

Passionate about Marvel movies? Have an opinion on the NFL? Own a cute dog? Well, so do thousands of other accounts on YouTube. If those things are your passion, then you might want to pursue them, but it’s increasingly difficult to penetrate a cluttered market.

YouTube, however, is a broad church, housing content for all sorts of tastes. Some of the more niche content we have seen include casino streamers, who might be spinning the reels of the Buffalo Blitz slot, and other popular games for high stakes. They don’t get millions of views, but there are certainly enough viewers to make it viable.

The key is to broadcast something you are passionate about and have some level of expertise in. If you try to blag, say, your knowledge of movies, then you’ll be quickly found out. And, it’s worth remembering that your passion and expertise can make up for any shortcomings when it comes to production values. Below are some of the most popular YouTube topics:

  • Business advice
  • Sports
  • Travel
  • Makeup
  • Fashion
  • Pets
  • Movies
  • Video games
  • Technology

Remember, though, that these topics are best avoided if you do not have a unique perspective or genuine expertise in the subject.

#3]. Engage with your audience

Why is YouTube so popular? Obviously, the content plays a role, and the site is a goldmine of the weird and wonderful. But there are also sociological forces at play; namely, people want to feel part of a community.

You’ll see that popular streamers spend time in their videos doing “shout outs” to subscribers, engaging with their comments, and responding to their suggestions. This is one of the best ways to create and run a successful YouTube channel if you asked me.

This is because, at times, it feels that those interactions are more important than the content produced. Another way to engage is through competitions, especially if your channel is based around a product.

The prizes don’t have to be expensive. In fact, there are creative ways to run competitions at little to no cost. Again, make sure you are consistent and follow through with the competition – even if few people have entered.

#4]. Be aware of YouTube’s ways of working

There are numerous methods to start getting your videos appearing on people’s feeds on YouTube. One such method is employing SEO tactics, i.e., adding search-friendly keywords to your video’s description. However, this is easier said than done, and YouTube SEO is a bit different from regular SEO.

Moreover, you should resist the temptation to create click-bait. One such example is YouTube accounts putting the phrase “how to” – a highly searchable term – do such and such into the video description when it really isn’t a guide to anything.

You can be smart about descriptions and use SEO best practice, but you can annoy potential subscribers if the video does not reflect what you claim it does.

#5]. Learn the basics of editing and video production

Regardless of the wonderful content that you create, subscribers will turn away if the video is badly produced. Therefore, don’t just use some free screen recording software to make your videos. For a start, sound levels are key. If your mic is too loud, the video might sound very distorted.

If mic levels are too low, then the viewers might not hear your voice. It’s also crucial to be aware of how other media, like music or movie clips, will impact the audio levels of your voice if you are talking over them.

Practice makes perfect, of course, but you should also invest in some decent equipment and software for editing. Ironically, perhaps, one of the best places to learn these techniques is by watching tutorials on YouTube.

Also, beware of the comments section. Some viewers might complain about distortion or poor audio levels when there is nothing wrong with your sound. This might be an issue with their device, not your production. If in doubt, ask the viewers for more feedback.
