Gone are those days when bootstrapping, angel funding, venture capital and equity and debt financing were the only popular way of financing a business idea.

You will all agree with me that newly launched and growing startups require funding, and crowdfunding site is a perfect place to raise money.

Here comes the era of crowdfunding campaigns alternately known as crowd financing, equity crowdfunding or hyper funding. Crowdfunding websites help young entrepreneurs get funds for their startup projects from people interested in the project.

No doubt about it, crowdfunding websites are the next generation of business investment. However, the fact about crowdfunding websites is that not all the projects posted are great.

Nowadays, it seems the whole idea of crowdfunding has been hijacked. The concept has been flooded by opportunists and chancers who now exploit the concept to enrich themselves.

These set of people offer increasingly ridiculous things in return for investments on their projects. Below are some of the most ridiculous crowdfunding campaigns funded on crowdfunding websites:

#1]. Wemadeamillionaire.com

When you talk about ridiculous ideas ever to be crowdfunded, this one will surely be at the forefront. Though it’s not listed or posted on a crowdfunding website, it’s still a crowdfunding idea – a 90-day social experiment online said to be ‘like no other’.

Wemadeamillionaire

Launched on July 28, Multimillionaire experiment aims to make a ‘stranger’ on the internet stinking rich – a stranger who isn’t even revealing his or her name or details.

The brain behind this idea asks for either a ‘gold ($9.99)’, ‘silver ($4.99)’ or ‘bronze ($1.29)’ donation.

For those crazy kind enough to donate, they get their picture on the ‘thank you’ wall of the website. It has been able to raise $14,204 at the time of writing this post.

#2]. I’m making potato salad

What started as a joke between friends went viral and became a worldwide phenomenon.

Zack Danger Brown, from Columbus, Ohio, said on his Kickstarter page that should he raise $3,000 he will ‘rent out a party hall and invite the whole internet to the potato salad party.’

Brown has also pledged to create a live stream of himself making some kickass potato salad, as well as film a thank you video for everyone who put a few dollars his way.

Zack Brown’s offer of a simple potato salad later attracted donations of $55,493 USD apparently from potato dish lovers.

#3]. Grilled Cheesus

Now, another ridiculously crazy crowdfunded campaign that started as a fun idea is Grilled Cheesus.

Grilled Cheesus is an electronic sandwich press that toasts the face of Jesus onto your sandwich bread!

This gag gift-like Kickstarter product was literally made for people that feel left out when people see Jesus in their toast.

Like its cheese-loving Kickstarters say, “however you slice it, the Grilled Cheesus lets you bring little grilled miracles to mealtime, snack time, or anytime.” Amen.

This crowdfunded campaign was able to raise a total of $25,604.

#4]. MISSY for Prez

Missy for Prez

Apparently, Sakura is a dreamer who had all kind of weird dreams about musicians becoming political figures in the US.

So, in one of her most bizarre dreams, Missy Elliott became the President of the United States of America.

She wore a tracksuit in the oval office, a tracksuit in the conference room, and she also had a matching air force plane to match her flying tracksuit.

And Sakura wanted people to fund her so that she could make one of a kind tracksuits. She claimed she’s inspired by a dream she had of Missy Elliott as the President of the United States of America. Guess what, this weird dreamer successfully raised $2,492 USD.

#5]. Staring at the Camera

Staring at the camera

The tagline reads “I will make a film showing myself staring at the camera for thirty minutes. Possibly more.”

Jeremy Bornstein believes the complimentary remarks he gets about his “very expressive eyes”.

So, he decided to make a short film showing himself staring at the camera for thirty minutes, and give that film away for free on the internet to anyone who wants to download it.

“That is why I only need $15,037 to fund this project,” he said. But unfortunately for him, he could only raise $1,389 USD.

……………

So what do you guys think?
