Huawei announced its latest smartphone: the Huawei Mate S at IFA 2015 in Berlin. This Android smartphone looks gorgeous, and offers some pretty interesting features. But can it compete well with Samsung Galaxy S6 And S6 Edge?

The Huawei Mate S is the successor to the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 and it’s meant to help Huawei to attract more customers, especially the new generation of users. But unfortunately, Galaxy S6 series and Note 5 will be major competitors for this awesomely designed Huawei smartphone.

Huawei Mate S essential features

Huawei Mate S is the world’s first smartphone with Force Touch technology. What is Force Touch? This is the fancy screen technology you find in the Apple Watch and the trackpad of the new MacBook – and yes, Huawei has stuck it in a smartphone. The Huawei Mate S, the successor to the Huawei Ascend Mate 7, comes in three models; 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. It’s only in that last model, the 128GB one, where you’ll find Force Touch.

Best of Android apps

The other two models don’t boast the fancy screen tech, and while Huawei has given us release dates for those two, it’s yet to announce pricing and availability for the 128GB model. Below are other super awesome features that can make Huawei Mate S a top smartphone:

#1). Better design, powerful and better user experience

At just 7.2mm thin, the Mate S provides a really comfortable and premium mobile experience. This Android smartphone by Huawei has redefined smartphone design . The polished finish will mean you won’t want to put it down.

Huawei Mate SThe Huawei Mate S builds on its predecessor when it comes to design, with a slender 7.2mm all-metal frame looking and feeling suitably premium. The slightly curved rear means it sits nicely in the hand, and while it has the same screen size as the iPhone 6 Plus, Huawei has kept bezels to a minimum meaning it’s shorter and narrower.

Huawei Mate S features a brilliant 5.5-inch Full HD display, which extends to the very edges of phone, creating a borderless viewing experience. With an impressive 2,700mAh battery on board, the Mate S isn’t likely to leave you short on charge when you’re out and about.

A powerful octa-core processor drives the Mate S, helping to deal with multitasking and using large apps. If you want to watch movies and tweet about them at the same time, you’ll not run into any problems.

#2). Display and Force Touch technology

Huawei Mate SIt was rumoured that Huawei Mate S would pack a QHD display, but alas Huawei has had to stick with a full HD resolution. The screen however is smaller than the Mate 7 at 5.5 inches, giving you a pleasing 401ppi.

That matches the iPhone 6 Plus and OnePlus 2 in both size and resolution. The screen also boasts AMOLED technology making it clear and bright, and I found that even in sunlight it was still useable.

The big talking point here though is Force Touch. The 3D Force Touch Technology allows the display on the Huawei Mate S to gauge the amount of pressure you’re applying, and then provide different functions depending on the level of force.

When looking at a photo you can hold down on an area to see it magnified in a bubble. The harder you press, the more zoomed in your magnification will be. Come out to the gallery overview and hard pressing on the images provides you with a larger thumbnail preview.

#3). Better camera with load of professional settings

Huawei Mate S features 13Mp camera that has a load of professional settings pre-installed, giving your photos that extra something. Control shutter speed, exposure and light saturation for that perfect shot.

Huawei Mate S features 8MP front cameraThe camera comes with a four-colour RGBW sensor, which is more than its competitors according to Huawei, and helps to capture a more vibrant picture and colourful image.

As well as a four-colour sensor, the Mate S has 1.2-degree optical image stabilisation, which should combat (to a certain degree) the shakiness in the videos and images taken on the smartphone. It also features a colour temperature LED flash, which aims to combat the tinge left by the flash that some smartphone users suffer from.

The company claims that the rear-facing camera also boasts a Digital SLR level sensor, which can be fully optimised by using the ‘Pro’ camera mode available from within the stock camera app. Most smartphones fall down when it comes to the front-facing lens, but the Mate S’ 8MP shooter certainly isn’t one. With pre-positioned soft light, you selfies will look awesome.

#4). Awesome features and functionalities such as Knuckle 2.0

For the first time you can use your knuckles to crop and edit photographs on the Mate S, by simply drawing on the display. You can also draw out a letter to skip to an app – like ‘C’ for the amazing 13MP camera, for example.

The smartphone also features multi-purpose fingerprint sensor. Round the back of the handset is a fingerprint sensor, just underneath the camera lens. Although its primary function is to add a level of security to your smartphone, it can also be used for scrolling through web pages and snapping photos.
